Many classes are taught in a
“paint-along” format, leaving students with many questions regarding how to
proceed on your own once the instructor is not available. Unlike those, this
workshop is geared to helping students explore the medium in an environment
meant to help you find your preferred method of working. This ensures that once
the instructor leaves, you have the basic skills and knowledge to proceed on
your own.
Pastels look like a drawing tool, but they are
considered to be a painting medium. In this workshop, you will learn to use
pastels to create beautiful paintings. We will explore various methods of
application, blending and several types of work surfaces. We will also discuss
how to use watercolor, acrylic and even oil paints for under-paintings. We will
discuss and sample many different types of pastels available and the pros and
cons of each. This workshop includes hands-on experience with various work
surfaces, the degrees of hardness and softness of pastels. You will also learn
which erasers work for different situations and what types of blenders are
available. We will discuss when and how to use each of these tools.
We will focus on techniques specific
to the pastel medium, how to use them as a drawing tool as well as perform
“paint” effects like dry brushing, scumbling, and glazing. The information
offered includes: how to maintain an archival quality to a medium that has been
mistakenly thought of as “fragile”, yet can be one of the most forgiving and
versatile materials. There will be discussion of marketing and selling your
finished works. Becky will answer questions regarding the unique specifics of
landscape, still life and portrait painting.
Each student will have the
opportunity to work on their own composition with the advice and assistance of
the instructor. With the limited class size, each attendee will receive personal
attention from the instructor.
